The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that it was taking significant steps to mitigate the risks posed by exhaustion among air traffic controllers, after a series of close calls last year raised alarms about the safety of the U.S. air travel system.

Mike Whitaker, the F.A.A. administrator, issued a directive increasing the number of hours that controllers are required to rest between shifts from nine hours to 10, and 12 hours before a midnight shift. He said he hoped to put the changes in place within 90 days.

The announcement came as...

Rough seas were a fitting symbol for this week’s meeting of Group of 7 foreign ministers on the Italian island of Capri. Coast Guard ships that ferried V.I.P.s across the Gulf of Naples to the island on Wednesday swayed precariously, leaving the passengers reaching for their motion-sickness medicine — and, in some cases, their sick bags.

Though no ministers from this elite international coalition, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, were known to have lost their lunch, the global problems they confronted were enough to make even a...

A senior director for the pro-Trump group Turning Point Action resigned from his post on Thursday and abruptly withdrew his re-election bid in Arizona, three days after being accused in a court complaint of forging voters’ signatures.

It was dramatic turnabout for Austin Smith, a House member in his first term representing parts of northwestern Maricopa County. He has been a vocal election skeptic in Arizona, a battleground state.

On Monday, Mr. Smith was named in a complaint filed in state Superior Court by one of his constituents, who said that...

An appeals court dismissed charges against a Michigan election worker who put a USB flash drive into an electronic poll book and downloaded the names of voters at the close of a primary election in 2022.

The court's conclusion: James Holkeboer's conduct was improper but not a crime.

He was charged with election fraud. But Holkeboer's lawyers pointed out that the state law used by prosecutors only bars acts that change the election record.

The federal government gave nearly $700 million to Planned Parenthood during a one-year span in which the clinic performed a record number of abortions, which coincided with a decline in all other major services, a recent report shows.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has vowed to expand access to Planned Parenthood's abortion services.

Planned Parenthood's 2022-2023 report released Tuesday, called "Above and Beyond," found that several non-abortion categories of services were down, compared to the previous year. Contraceptive services...

Washington — A third Republican joined the effort to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from his post on Friday, making it more likely that Democrats will have to save him if it comes to a vote.

Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona announced he was signing onto the motion to vacate against Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, after the House advanced a foreign aid package with more Democratic votes than Republican support.
