I figured we needed a thread specifically about the media.

There was a very big correction recently by the Washington Post.

That story was supposedly "independently confirmed" by CNN, NBC News, USA Today, ABC News, & PBS News Hour. How could they all have gotten the quote wrong if they actually independently confirmed the story?

Why do all the errors always go in one political direction and not closer to 50/50?

Still, when was the last time a sitting President had to use the 14th Amendment to raise it anyway? Why did Biden have to insist on such a hard-line from the very beginning, seemingly not wanting to discuss anything except on a clean lift? Both sides, from the beginning, even months ago, seemingly had this “my way or the Highway” attitude that cost a lot of significant negotiating time and it was so unnecessary.
You know what, no president had had to use the 14th amendment before. Why? Because the House has never acted this way before - well, except one other time when Obama was president the Rs did try this little gambit. When Trump was President, Congress raised the debt limit 3 times in 4 years, always on a bi-partisan basis, because it’s the right thing to do. Democrats didn’t try to force Trump to make budget concessions.

Once again, the budget has nothing to do with the debt ceiling. Now we have Trump goading the Republicans to make more and more ridiculous demands, and I believe it’s because Trump wants to crash the economy to hurt Biden. He’s a sociopath. And the Rs are aiding and abetting him all the way.

So you don’t seem to have a clear handle on this whole issue, I am questioning what sources you are reading because you seem to be getting some bum info.

Biden didn't insist on a hard line. His stance has been "don't crash the world economy for political points", which seems reasonable to me.

Trump’s not the one in office right now and considering most Americans will blame McCarthy and House Republicans if this shirt goes south, more then likely, McCarthy will make a deal with Biden and have to like it even if he hates it privately because he values staying in power in this situation more than appeasing Trump, who doesn’t give two shirts about him anyway. It’s going to be very hard for Trump to get elected again in 2024 when Dems and Biden will rightfully blame him for the current recession we’d be in then.

Regardless of what happens, McCarthy might be done as Speaker because he can’t please anyone and as puny and pathetic as we might think Kevin McCarthy is, at least he’s willing to talk to Biden. Imagine if Matt Gaetz, MTG, Lauren Boebert, Good, or Byron Donalds were SOTH? We would be seriously more forked then we are now.

That’s strange, didn’t he say he wouldn’t negotiate at first several months ago?
He has always says he would negotiate with the House over the budget, during the budgetary process, just not over the debt ceiling. Whoever you are reading is twisting it around on Biden when this is entirely the R shirt show.

What is there to negotiate? The entire point is that the US needs to borrow money to cover a budget that was already passed by Congress and signed into law. It's already done. It's like going into a restaurant and eating your meal, then refusing to pay because you think the prices are too high.

These negotiations didn’t nearly have to start at the 11th hour, that’s what I’m saying. Biden was supposedly saying back in March he wouldn’t negotiate or even talk to McCarthy and a lot of time was wasted. These talks should’ve occurred 3 months ago and everyone could’ve cleared the air, got some rhetorical BS off their chests and the debt ceiling gets raised. Biden’s refusal to even talk to McCarthy only led him to dig in his heels even more and continue this idiotic soap opera.

And my point is that there was no point in negotiations. The money was legally allocated by Congress, and now the GOP-led House is trying to prevent the government from actually spending it. That's extortion and most likely illegal. If we default, the world economy suffers greatly. Not just us, but everyone. McCarthy knows this but is piss scared of the crazies in his party whose boots he bent down and licked in order to get his position. He's a spineless Peice of work holding the entire world economy hostage in order to get what he wants. In my books, that's a terrorist. And the US doesn't negotiate with frigging terrorists.

McCarthy doesn’t have the luxury of being able to ignore crazies because unlike Pelosi, he didn’t inherit a House majority with 30-35 seats or more. Otherwise, we’d still be in that macabre political theater of trying to nominate a Speaker and then nothing would really get done. He had to make too many compromising deals to the Freedom Caucus, which gave the them outsized influence over his decision-making. McCarthy didn’t enough of a majority to ignore them so did he really have much of a choice if we’re pontificating from the sidelines like we could have done a better job? As weak and spineless as you think McCarthy is, he’s still far better than having Donalds, MTG, Good, Gaetz, or Boebert as SOTH. We’d be much more forked then now. They’re the real domestic terrorists, McCarthy just didn’t inherit the luxury of being able to ignore them by having a very narrow, House majority and dictating terms the way he’d liked too.

None of the wingnuts would have had a chance at winning. McCarthy bent over backward to give them what they wanted to gain power. He's a craven, spineless piece of shirt. I was hoping like hell one of the moderate, purple district sane GOP reps would have gone to the Democrats to put support behind Jeffries in exchange for smaller concessions than what McCarthy gave up.

Jeffries would have been dealing with a rigged hand, too and whatever he proposed, wouldn’t come to fruition. Hed still be presiding over a deeply, divided polarized House. Some of his political positions go even further than what most moderate, sane Republicans hold on to. What you’re arguing for is a bit of wish-fulfillment and not realistic, politically.

And define “smaller” concessions you think Jeffries could offer them that he’d follow through with and wouldn’t forget somewhere down the line or renege for political expediency later on. You really are naive about how cutthroat and selfish D.C. insider politics really is.

You also ignored McCarthy tried to ignore them for close to a week and beat them down while the House Speaker nomination process became a macabre, political soap opera process. They wouldn’t budge because they’re fanatics.

I never argued for it. I said I was hoping like hell. I knew it wasn't going to happen because that sort of thing will never happen in this country, in this climate.

I don't have any specific examples, but there should be plenty that are far less impactful than giving any single member the ability to bring the house to a grinding halt by calling for a motion to vacate.

You really are naive about how cutthroat and selfish D.C. insider politics really is.

I mean... no? It's on plain display 24/7. Me quietly hoping against all odds for a major curveball isn't naivety, it's wishful thinking. If you want to discuss naivety and politics, you are barking up the wrong tree.

You also ignored McCarthy tried to ignore them for close to a week and beat them down while the House Speaker nomination process became a macabre, political soap opera process. They wouldn’t budge because they’re fanatics.

Exactly my damn point. He gave in to fanatics. That's a terrible idea.

Jeffries would have had no problem passing a debt ceiling increase if he had the majority and was Speaker. The "radicals" on the left aren't nearly as willing to burn everything down as the true ones on the right are.
