Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

Watching the GOP try to define "woman" is like watching Dems try to define "assault rifle".

The problem is almost any attempt to define a woman will necessarily exclude people who have traditionally been treated as women. There are women who have a Y chromosome, there are women who have the SRY gene, and so on. These are obviously exceptions, but when we're talking about transgender issues - all we have are exceptions. There are some estimates that a bit less than 2% of the population have intersex characteristics.
The fact of the matter is we tend to treat women as women when we believe they are women - it's a tautology.

Zephyr, a first-term representative from Missoula, said in the debate that denying such care was "tantamount to torture," and that a ban would lead to more suicides.

"If you vote yes on this bill and yes on these amendments, I hope the next time there's an invocation when you bow your heads in prayer, you see the blood on your hands," Zephyr said.

In response, the Republican supermajority silenced her within the chamber until she apologized, prompting a large protest by Zephyr supporters at the statehouse on Monday

North Dakota’s governor has signed a bill into law that allows public school teachers and state government employees to ignore the pronouns their transgender students and colleagues use, the governor’s office announced on Monday.

The new law, signed by the Republican governor, Doug Burgum, also requires teachers to tell a parent or legal guardian if the student is transgender. It also prohibits transgender students from using the appropriate bathroom without prior approval from a parent or guardian.

    It takes effect immediately.

Burgum said in a statement that the new law “largely codifies existing practices while reaffirming the first amendment right to free speech … balancing the rights and interests of students, parents and teachers.”

Opponents counter that the state’s Republican leaders are violating the constitutional rights of students and teachers by compelling the speech of adults and potentially exposing children to dangerous repercussions if an abusive parent doesn’t approve.

“Mandatory outing of a student’s trans identity violates their privacy rights at school – particularly for trans youth who cannot be safe at home. And creating a supportive working and learning environment also requires treating people with dignity and respect, including – at a minimum – calling them by the name and pronouns they want to use. These are both unlawful and discriminatory practices,” said Cody Schuler, advocacy manager of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Dakota.

Supporters have said the measure boosts parental rights and brings peace of mind to teachers. Others said the governor should have done more to limit trans rights………

But it’s drag shows that degrade family values
    ===================
A Republican Texas state lawmaker who once proposed banning children from attending drag shows to supposedly shield them from being groomed for abuse has resigned after he was found to have engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a 19-year-old intern.

Bryan Slaton, 45, resigned on Monday while facing mounting calls from the state’s Republicanparty and conservative groups to step down.

A state house investigation last week determined that he supplied alcohol to the intern and another young staffer, had sex with the intern after she had become intoxicated, and later showed her a threatening email while saying everything would be fine if she kept quiet about the encounter.

House investigators noted as well that Slaton had asked a fellow lawmaker to keep his behavior secret…….

    Astonishing.

That he's been pressured to resign, I mean.
His district must be positively crimson red.

Most people use are so upset about Drag Queens and Trans people use 'morals" as a substitute for hate... They just have hate in their blood, but are too cowardly to say it.

hope they find who did this

So interestingly enough, I know Erin Reed. She's an alumni of my high school and she's been very helpful to me with my family issues. Very nice person and just goes to show how truly awful some people are -- basically trying to have her harmed/killed because of her advocacy. Fortunately she was smart enough and the police department was competent enough to preempt it.

These state legislatures are out of control. I’m a 68 yo woman, and according to their definition, I’m no longer allowed to use the womens bathroom?

Watching the GOP try to define "woman" is like watching Dems try to define "assault rifle".

Knowing a bit about Cohen, I clicked on the tweet to see if they had a link to the actual text of SB180. There wasn't a link to the bill, just a summary, and the summary has a list of definitions, one of which is "female", not "woman", and states that "A “female” means an individual whose biological reproductive system is developed to produce ova", which doesn't mean ova has to be produced, just that the piping is there, which means that neither infertile women or intersex will be banned from any bathroom.

Also, it is not a "bathroom bill"; while it mentions bathrooms, it also covers the following:
    ● Athletics; ● Prisons or other detention facilities; ● Domestic violence centers; ● Rape crisis centers; ● Locker rooms; ● Restrooms; and ● Other areas where biology, safety, or privacy are implicated that result in separate accommodations.

Now, I am not taking sides here, other than point out that we need to go beyond the bias confirming grabbing headline.

That still bars intersex women, etc.

Women with Androgen insensitivity syndrome have an XY chromosome and the SRY gene... But because their bodies are resistant to androgen, they never develop as males, they're raised as girls and look like girls phenotypically (vagina, breast development etc). But they have undescended testes and thus fail this criteria.

Some women are born without ovaries due to birth defects... Some women are born without a uterus or a vagina but with ovaries... And so on

Biology is messy... Nature really doesn't do binary.

What if you have had your reproductive organs removed? What if you were born without them?

You can parse it any way you want, trying to get the government involved in regulating who uses which bathroom is stupid beyond belief.

Nature does binary very well, especially when it comes to mammals. We wouldn't be without this binary model.
Intersex people, that sort of a spectrum. Not that I think proposers of such bills recognize birth defects.

The "developed" part would cover hysterectomies. Yes, some people are born with birth defects, but I don't think the makers of those bills realize that.

I am not trying to parse anything trying to get the government involved in anything,

I am just saying, go with the actual source, not some twitter headline.

On a side note, I thought Twitter could not be trusted and everyone with any credence has left it.

and the same people will throw a fit if they see a person with a beard go in the womans bathroom (not knowing that person is Trans).

Most likely, if not surely. But again, I am just saying we should not grab bias-confirming click grabbers and run with them.
