    This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

    We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

    There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

    Too late, Mr. Chief Justice. You sold your soul with several decisions. Among them? Deeply held beliefs. Money is speech. The concept of judicial review is bullschlitz on its face. The document called the constitution forbids three things: bills of attainder, ex post facto laws and religious tests for office. The amendments go into various freedoms which are not absolute. They also get into taking private property without just compensation. Beyond that decisions such as Dobbs are not based on the constitution. They are the personal opinions of a majority of justices wielding a power that they have no constitutional foundation to do so. When Alito’s idiocy was exposed it showed not ignorance but arrogance. The list of things unmentioned in the constitution is infinte. NO medical procedure of any kind is “constitutional”. If the justices wished to couch decisions as not being for “the general welfare” then they might have an argument but even then the decision is their opinion based upon their belief structure.

    Either the Republicans are idiots or they think we are

    How in the holy fork can you say with a straight face “We don’t need to do anything about gay marriage. gay marriage is settled law.” After what just happened?!

    bolding mine. That’s the key phrase
    ==================================================

    ……..As politicians in both parties are well aware, support for marriage equality now exceeds 70 percent in polls. When Americans began debating this issue in earnest around 2004, Republicans all predicted that allowing gay people to marry would lead to the breakdown of civilization; as you may be aware, parents have continued to raise their children, straight people still get married and civilization remains intact.

    So the GOP response to the Respect for Marriage Act has mostly been that it’s unnecessary — Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called it a “stupid waste of time” — because, some claim, the status quo won’t change anytime soon.

    Meanwhile, candidates such as Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) are flopping positions — they’re for it, they’re against it — in hopes of finding a message that will satisfy everyone.

    If you want to reassure the majority of voters that they have nothing to fear from the GOP — right after the Supreme Court showed them just how much they have to fear — how can you do that and still convince your base that you’re on a righteous moral crusade and will stop at nothing to achieve your goals?

    Let’s be clear: Overturning Obergefell and making it possible for states to outlaw same-sex marriage is still the official position of the Republican Party. Republicans laid that out in their 2016 platform, which they re-adopted in full in 2020.

    When they claim they won’t follow through on this goal, Republicans are effectively denying their own power. Yet they spent decades working to get themselves to where they are now. They furiously gerrymandered congressional and state legislative districts. They passed a wave of state-level voter suppression laws.

    And perhaps most important, they engineered their supermajority on the Supreme Court while losing the popular vote in every presidential election save one in the past 30 years.

    The whole point of creating that Supreme Court majority was to get what they want on policy no matter what the public wants. But as they’ve learned in the wake of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, their prior position was a far better spot politically, allowing them to harness the anger and alienation that come from losing on culture-war issues without having to take responsibility for what happens if they win……

    I have zero doubt this is intentional and coordinated
    ====================

    Supporters of former president Donald Trump have swamped local election offices across the nation in recent weeks with a coordinated campaign of requests for 2020 voting records, in some cases paralyzing preparations for the fall election season.

    In nearly two dozen states and scores of counties, election officials are fielding what many describe as an unprecedented wave of public records requests in the final weeks of summer, one they say may be intended to hinder their work and weaken an already strained system.

    The avalanche of sometimes identically worded requests has forced some to dedicate days to the process of responding even as they scurry to finalize polling locations, mail out absentee ballots and prepare for early voting in October, officials said.

    In Wisconsin, one recent request asks for 34 different types of documents. In North Carolina, hundreds of requests came in at state and local offices on one day alone.

    In Kentucky, officials don’t recognize the technical-sounding documents they’re being asked to produce — and when they seek clarification, the requesters say they don’t know, either.

    The use of mass records requests by the former president’s supporters effectively weaponizes laws aimed at promoting principles of a democratic system — that the government should be transparent and accountable. Public records requests are a key feature of that system, used by regular citizens, journalists and others.

    In interviews, officials emphasized that they are trying to follow the law and fulfill the requests, but they also believe the system is being abused.

    “When you are asking for every single document under the sun, it becomes difficult for us to do our job,” said Claire Woodall-Vogg, the executive director of the Milwaukee Election Commission.
Many administrators said they suspect that may be the point.

    They believe that those organizing the effort are not out for information but rather are trying to cause chaos as their fall crunchtime approaches, making it more difficult to run smooth elections and giving critics new openings to attack the integrity of election administration in the United States.

    They point to the identical nature of the requests as well as the number of duplicates individual counties have received — each one of which they must respond to, by law…….

    Good article from Robert Reich
    =======================
    I have a serious question for people who have power in America, and who continue to deny the outcome of the 2020 election and enable Trump’s big lie: what are you saying to yourself in private? How are you justifying yourself in your own mind?

    I don’t mean to be snide or snarky. I’m genuinely curious.

    If you hold public office and deny the outcome of the 2020 election, are you telling yourself that despite the overwhelming evidence that Biden won and the lack of evidence of fraud, you still genuinely doubt the outcome?

    But you must know that 60 federal courts have found no basis in Trump’s claim, nor have any so-called state “audits” and even Trump’s own attorney general found the claim baseless.

    Or are you telling yourself that it will soon be over – that Trump will fade, that the big lie will disappear, that your party and America will soon move on?

    But you must know you’re wrong. The big lie is growing. It has metastasized into a cancer that’s dividing the nation and devouring our democracy.

    Or are you telling yourself that you have no real choice but to support the lie if you want to keep or obtain political power?

    Even if true, is power so intoxicating to you – so important as an end in itself – that you’ll do anything for it?

    Where will you draw the line? If Trump is reelected and imposes martial law? If he or another Republican president forbids public criticism of his administration? If he calls for violence against those who oppose him?……

    He has already called for violence against those who oppose him. He has done so consistently ever since his first campaign when he asked his audience to knock out demonstrators and promised he would pay their legal bills. The Rs who are still with him are hopelessly lost. They’re dangerous, unAmerican traitors to this country. They should never be allowed to be part of the American experiment similarly to how Confederate officers were not allowed to be part of government after the Civil War. Their betrayal of America is on a similar level.

    Lee County Republicans this week will consider resolutions demanding Florida outlaw electronic voting machines and federal agents. They will also consider whether to declare the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Economic Forum (WEF) as terrorist organizations.

    The series of controversial resolutions will appear on the agenda for a special meeting to be held Sept. 15 at party headquarters. The meeting will be closed to the public, with only REC members permitted to attend.

    Jonathan Martin, Chair of the Lee County Republican Executive Committee (REC), stressed that the resolutions do not represent the view of the REC unless and until a majority of members support adopting them.

    “They are not necessarily a priority of the party until the party chooses to make them a priority,” said Martin, a likely incoming state Senator............

    OK, cool. Now, the next hurricane that smashes Lee County can be dealt with in its entirety by Lee County. I have had enough of these neo-confederates. Want help with outbreak of some disease? Go take a flying flock at a rolling doughnut.

    Damn straight. If they vote to do that, any flood policies they have should automatically be cancelled the minute they ratify. I'm so sick of seeing this. F those people. F them all.

    And, the feds have found some voter fraud in NY. Like most voter fraud, it mainly affects only a few ballots and seems to have started with local elections. These guys do seem to have decided it was just too easy to keep going - and were in positions of public trust. I hope they all go to jail.

    Interesting article

    The 2022 primary season has come to an end — and with it so should any claims that our politics is afflicted by “polarization.”

    In both parties, ideological forces did indeed try to pull the center of gravity toward the extremes. But the results were sharply different.

    In the GOP, the hard right prevailed, very much confirming the impression of a MAGA takeover of the party.

    In the Democratic primaries, the hard left was a nonentity, and the mainstream triumphed overwhelmingly; for all the chatter about the Squad, socialists, “Defund the Police,” “Abolish ICE,” “Medicare-for-all” and the “Green New Deal,” candidates who self-identified with such views barely registered.

    An exhaustive study of all primary contestants for the House and Senate, done by a team led by Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution, categorized the 2,362 candidates (of whom 1,397 were Republican) by endorsements, self-proclaimed ideology and use of hot-button phrases.

    On the Democratic side, only 28 percent of candidates approvingly used left-wing phrases on their websites (Defund, Medicare-for-all, Green New Deal, etc.) or received an endorsement from either Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a member of the Squad, or the left-wing groups Justice for All, Our Revolution or Indivisible. Of the nearly three-quarters of Democratic candidates who had none of the above, about half won their primaries.

    By contrast, 41 percent of Republican candidates approvingly mentioned former president Donald Trump, MAGA or “America First,” or had a Trump endorsement or a Trump photo on their websites. Fifty-nine percent of Republicans had none of those — but such candidates prevailed only 30 percent of the time.

    The upshot, Kamarck tells me, is that the majority of Republican nominees on the November ballot are MAGA adherents, while the vast majority of Democratic nominees do not identify with left-wing figures or causes.

    Looking at it another way, the Brookings researchers found that 36 percent of GOP primary candidates identified themselves as MAGA Republicans, whereas only 1.5 percent of Democrats identified as socialists. And of the 13 candidates nationwide who called themselves democratic socialists, only five won, all in safely blue districts.

    “The bottom line here is the left in the Democratic Party is simply not as strong as the right is within the Republican Party,” says Kamarck, a veteran of the Clinton White House who also teaches at Harvard University.

    The results don’t include Tuesday’s final round of primaries, but there weren’t enough contests to change the overall results much.

    The findings put the lie to the Republican caricature of Democrats as a bunch of radical socialists.

    They also show that the far left is something of a paper tiger, with disproportionate influence on social media and within urban Democratic powerhouses but with a relatively small constituency in the party nationwide……

    The grifters keep on grifting, and the idiots keep giving them their money. Look at the comments in the Fox News article.

    They're all so excited an elated by Ron DeSantis flying immigrants to Martha's Vineyard, that they're sending him their money because he's "owning the libs". Dumbasses didn't even bother to inform themselves that DeSantis deceivingly got these asylum seekers to board planes in San Antonio, then fly them to Florida to make it look like they where coming from Florida, to then fly them to Martha's Vineyard. I really hate Republicans and their voters for the unending lies, distortions, conspiracies, stupidity and hate they constantly foment.

    ===================
    The approximately 50 migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard represent the latest example of a vile stunt in which GOP governors bus migrants to Democratic strongholds to protest President Biden’s border policies. Just as has happened elsewhere, island officials were surprised but are welcoming the new arrivals.

    What’s striking is how the DeSantis administration appears to have deliberately orchestrated this event for maximum cruelty and confusion. “There was no advance notice to island officials,” Julian Cyr, a Massachusetts state senator who represents the area, told me.

    A spokesman for the office of Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker — a Republican — didn’t immediately answer when I asked if DeSantis had given his office a heads-up.

    What’s more, some details of what DeSantis did remain a mystery. Cyr said migrants report being transported from San Antonio.

    “Many were staying in a shelter in San Antonio,” Cyr told me, adding, “A woman approached them outside the shelter and essentially lured them into taking the plane.” He said the migrants were informed they’d be able to get work papers.

    Cyr said the planes made one stop in Florida and another in South Carolina. Though all this remains unconfirmed, it dovetails with some migrants telling the Times that they started off in San Antonio. It’s unclear why a Florida governor is flying migrants from Texas to Massachusetts.

    Why this spectacle would thrill the right-wing base — or why DeSantis thinks it would — is an intriguing question. Coastal Massachusetts has long been a marker of liberal elitism in the lexicon of right-wing demonology due to Democratic presidents who have vacationed there.

    The story, obviously, is that rich liberal hypocrites want migrants welcomed but not in their own communities. Yet the island — a tightly knit rural community in the off season — is welcoming the migrants: They stayed the night at a church, and plans are being made for next steps.

    What’s more, DeSantis has raised money on the nearby island of Nantucket, which is swankier than Martha’s Vineyard. Plenty of high-rolling GOP donors summer on the two islands.
    A common right-wing refrain is that the “real” cruelty here is from Biden. He’s allowing many migrants to exercise their legal right to apply for asylum, which lures them to make the dangerous trek and means they’re released in the United States to await hearings.

    This argument is ugly and dumb. It erases from the equation the reason migrants are seeking refuge here, i.e., because they’re fleeing terrible conditions at home. The GOP “solution” is to dramatically restrict the right to asylum hearings so migrants can’t come at all, as Trump had some success doing.
