This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

Well, there is some evidence that the Republican Party is significantly shrinking in the years since Trump was elected. And that this is accelerating since his pushing election conspiracy theories.

I think this is why Rs have become willing to publicly say they need to repress the vote. They don’t see another way to go, IMO. They are doubling down on the crazy, and alienating moderates and independents by doing so (which is why Trump lost on Nov. 4 and why both R senators lost in the GA runoff).

I don’t see this changing much in the near future.

also shrinking for other reasons (covid deaths). I don't know if I've seen a breakdown, but I am willing to be the majority of un-vaccinated are people who voted for trump.

However, I think (Rs) already realize they are shrinking, which is why you have all those voter suppression laws being passed - and tinkering with election/reductions/restrictions etc

I hope that's the case, this next election will tell us a lot. I'm curious to see if moderates/independents will truly recognize the danger of the current Repulbican party as a whole or fall back on old fears/tropes of out of control progressives in power.

my worry is, even if they DO realize it, is it enough to overcome the voter suppression etc being put into place in GA and TX and... I don't know the validity of this information, but 18 states have enacted 30 laws in some form of voter suppression
one bit of good info is in the same link it says:
At the same time, at least 25 states enacted 54 laws with provisions to expand voting access.
These laws expand access to early and mail voting, make voter registration easier, and restore voting rights to Americans with past convictions, among other measures.

All this stolen election junk from the Trumpsters will hurt the R voting base more than these new voting laws will hurt the minorities.
Because of all the lies by Trump and Co, a lot of R's will have given up on the voting system because they are being told it is rigged.

South TX is tired of the open border and the burden put on them…even if they are Mexican Americans

I thought this would be the case, but there are pockets in blue states where the vaccination rates are still quite low. I want to say between 35 and 40%. I think the limited access to care for large groups of people in poorer areas is a big issue and I think that could potentially offset the low vax rates in some Republican circles.

Fwiw, most Republicans I know personally are already vaccinated. Even a few Trumpers. As much flack as the vaccines and what not get on Fox News, a lot of viewers know enough not to listen to some of the nonsense about the vaccines. There's a lady doctor who speaks frequently on some of the Fox shows and she's always encouraged viewers to get vaccinated. So I think some are heeding that.

Ultimately I think that will be a bit a wash. Republican numbers are still on a downward trend because Trump is running them off with his nonsensical behavior post-election.

Problem is, it doesn't matter that the GOP is shrinking. They've been too small to be nationally relevant for years, but they keep cheating and gerrymandering their way into power over and over again.

Well sort of. Too many people are still buying what they're selling. So, in some circumstances yeah, the gerrymandering and what not is a big issue, but in others, not so much.

We'll see how much that changes next cycle.

And you think everyone will just get along?

those are RINOS (just kidding - good that at least some are willing, I think it is a different picture down in the dirty south)

I guess it depends on the segment, Tucker has been putting doubt on air and questioning everything for months and other unhelpful stuff...well you know how Tucker can be

This is pretty great. This is one of the myriad reasons for not supporting the Trump Administration. I've always been a pretty optimistic individual, and the cynical, "nothing can be done about it" approach, and vilifying of groups of people isn't what I am looking for in a leader. I couldn't stand Trump's bombastic and irreverent behavior. It's well suited for a game show, but not much else.

And I also think cynicism leads to people not caring about others and also basically does away with empathy. I do feel the cynical side of me creeping in more than I like lately, and I don't like it.

I honestly don't know how you've kept that optimism.
there have been times where I've been like CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING (not to you - to the universe really)
but you'll post something along the lines of "naw, it won't be that bad, watch" (mostly in the supreme court topic a while back)
so far you've been right, thankfully

Here is a thorough report on the election in Maricopa County from actual election professionals, at least one of which is a long time Republican, who came out of retirement to counter the clown show that the Arizona Senate is sponsoring. I just don’t see how the Republican Party doesn’t end up splitting into two different parties if the Trumpists keep lying about the election. The real Republicans are starting to fight back.

Unrelated observation: I like that the Jan. 6 select committee has added a third Republican, former Congressman Denver Riggleman.

Yeah, Tucker is just terrible. I don't know why anyone would trust any sort of medical opinion from him.
