I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

I think we all figured he was actually trying to steal the election in his ham handed way. But it’s nice that these notes are being released.

“Former President Donald Trump pressured top Justice Department officials to publicly call the 2020 election “illegal” and “corrupt” and “leave the rest to me,” according to handwritten notes released by a House committee on Friday.

The notes, written by former acting Deputy Attorney General Richard P. Donoghue, shine additional light on the Trump’s unprecedented effort to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory during his waning days in office, based on false claims of fraud.”

From the post office slow down shirt onward Trump basically pulled - or attempted to pull - every move that was anticipated from him in his attempt to undermine/steal the election. It was uncanny.

After Jan 6th? You'd be a fool to do so.

I mean, in a weird way it's heartening to see that we're not as apathetic as I'd feared. OTOH, it's terrifying how easily misled some people are.
(Not directly related I guess but just made me think of this)

I had to work with my dad on something the Thursday or Friday following election day when it hadn't yet been officially called for Biden but you could tell he'd won. We went to have lunch and we were talking about the election and I told him, with him already personally accepting of a Biden victory, that imo Trump was not ever going to concede, would never admit defeat, and that he would push it all as far as he possibly could and because his supporters believe so strongly in him and that he's telling them the truth that I thought it could turn very ugly.

He asked me what did I think could actually happen? I said I don't really know and I'm not actually saying that I know this is going to happen (I think I may have even incorrectly said 'or that it's even that likely to happen'), but attacks on state capitals seem to be most likely thing to me based upon shirt I've seen online. He was just kind of dismissive of it which I can kind of understand - and kinda not. But he figured Trump would eventually do what he was supposed to do and concede.

He still didn't quite get it when I texted him early on Jan 6th that my friend's brother and his friend had traveled to DC with weapons. Then he watched it all go down a few hours later and said "you were right, I really never thought he'd push it this far."

I do not think the Jan 6 insurrection was an armed rebellion. IMO, it was the Trumpist version of looting.
Many of them went their armed and with the stated intent of preventing Biden from taking office.

What do you think most likely happens to let's say.. Pelosi.. had the mob been able to cross paths with her (Romney came within 30 seconds or so of crossing paths with some of them so it's not outside the realm of possibility)?

I think it's a fair hypothetical to pose.

It was violent as hell, though.
Those guys are gun crazy and most have many firearms (sometimes dozens ). If this was a true rebellion they would have come equipped with guns. That single cop that handled a crowd of hundreds of Trumpers in the capitol hallways would have been shot.

Everything about Trump and followers is Mickey Mouse stuff. There is not a whole lot of power in the brain of these people. Trump is an idiot so it is not surprise the followers are the same.

This loony guy is not exactly Paul Revere:

Doesn't have to have been well organized, well thought out, centrally organized, or even effective to have been an attempt.

It's pretty simple really, many of these people stated they were going there with the intent to prevent Biden from taking office.

You know when they decided it was go time on that plan? When they stormed the forking Capitol.

It's right there before your eyes and you downplay it and I don't understand why people do that with this unless it's just their bias at play.

I'm not following your reason for this. It's completely irrelevant.
I mean, we've all seen the footage. Are you seriously going to try to argue that crowd wasn't violent?!?

I did not say a word about violence. By the way looters after George Floyd were also violent. A black retired cop was murdered by a looter.

Guys! Move to the center so you can have some clarity in your vision.

I do not downplay it. All I am saying is that if this was a true insurrection it was poorly planned.
