I say pack it, stack it, shellack it, tallywhack it... As Moscow Mitch McConnell has proven with his actions re the SCOTUS over the last few years, there are no rules.

If we start supporting Machiavellian tactics, we start to elect politicians who are better at using those tactics.

We end up with 100 Matt Gaetz in the senate.

I might agree with you if we weren't already in a position where one Mitch McConnell or one Joe Manchin can grind our entire government to a halt.

Just because Trump is gone doesn't mean our situation is any less dire. The current Democrat gameplan doesn't work. It makes for great news stories and polling but it doesn't translate to actual success. Why? Because they let the Republicans change the rules but never countered. It doesn't matter if you have 100 Matt Gaetz and 1000 Nancy Pelosis if the 100 Gaetz win with only 30% of the vote.

I would rather Mitch McConnell grind our government to a halt than to just do whatever he wants with it.

    Power always changes hands.

Just quoting this becuase i think everyone in this thread needs to read it again.. every single word of this post is true.. yall are clinging to some 1950s idea of what integrity is supposed to look like in 2012, meanwhile you should all be bending over , becuase here it comes again... Sorry i cant be more eloquent, but it’s infuriating to me how many of yall are willing to let it happen.

You you believe that the Democrats will have power forever?

He already accomplished that. He got a 6-3 SCOTUS majority and hundreds of federal judges. Now he can sit back and wait for them to rubber stamp any legislation the GOP wants. Short of two justices retiring or dying in the next three years we're on borrowed time. Those three years aren't even guaranteed. The GOP could easily control the House and Senate by the end of 2022. They don't even need to win an actual majority of the votes, just a plurality of the votes they allow to be cast.

Well then, like I said, when everyone has no integrity, what eles is left but brute force politics? Not a world I want to live in.

It sounds like we’re ready to declare AOC dictator because it’s the only thing that will save us from the Empire of Ivanka.

Everything we can do they can undo and do worse when they get power back. The cycle will just go back and forth every half dozen years until one side finally crushes the other.

At that point all you have left is a dictatorship of some form.

Yeah, at some point, someone will just say screw elections, who needs that?

Not if you have robust federal legislation guaranteeing voting access and making political gerrymandering illegal, along with a SCOTUS that will support it. We're also just a handful of states away from the National Popular Vote Compact being ratified, which would effectively end the electoral college.

Yeah, at some point, someone will just say screw elections, who needs that?

You mean like now? Like the 47 state legislatures that are actively and openly making it harder for people to vote? You guys are afraid of a hypothetical that's already reality. We're already facing this crisis and it happened with Democrats doing exactly what you want them to do now.

You you believe that the Democrats will have power forever?

This post is Exhibit A in terms of the flaw of your thinking.

No, i dont believe Democrats will have power forever.. however, i do believe , nay, I KNOW that the Republicans are going to do whatever in the hell they want to do, grab power whenever and however they can- REGARDLESS of what the Democrats do now, or in 6 months or a year from now... But hey, let’s just keep going high while they go low. :cheer:

    Who’s going to tell him?

Dave- we already live in a world that none of us with half a brain in our skull would WANT to live in... We are all just trying to adjust on the fly and make this world maybe not so much of a crap hole, if we can.

You you believe that the Democrats will have power forever?
This.. always has to be considered - like with the filibuster - it's the inevitable flipside that will come with a shift in power and the consequences of such that will almost certainly be worse than otherwise as you've further expedited the race to a more partisan political bottom.

Yeah I know.. .. we all think the Republican party mostly sucks... I'm there with you. But Democrats should probably focus on passing their legislation than tinkering with fundamental institutions that ultimately I think would be likely to just lead us further down the rabbit hole with Republicans more incentivized to do the same moving forward.

.. That said, in theory it wouldn't really bother me if the Supreme Court was expanded by a maximum of two seats, but I don't really view it as a necessary balancing at this point.. especially with the ability of Republicans to counter the move in the near future by expanding it again.

Eh, I disagree. It can get a hell of a lot worse.

Yeah, I agree. Expanding the court is ultimately a red herring. Because it detracts from other more important issues. Tinkering with the court only encourages more shenanigans.

I'm already leery enough with politicians. And just a few months ago, Biden himself said the court shouldn't be tinkered with, lest it become politicized, yet here we are.

Fwiw, if the Democrats play the Republicans' game, I'm out. This is precisely why I left the Republican party to begin with. Republicans didn't have the guts or will to disavow Trump, and integrity is a foreign concept to almost all of them. I think the Democrats have some with integrity, but it's going to have to come from their newer leaders imo. The OG Democrats leave a lot to be desired.

If we beat them at their game, there won’t be anything worth winning.

    Same if we lose.
Not playing isn't an alternative, either.

Like a Union general, you either go to war and win or you watch your country disintegrate.

    Actually, no.

I haven't seen the kind of machinations from the Democrats that are designed to cement power regardless of elections.
So crushing the GOP would get you single-party rule for one, maybe two cycles. Then something with conservative principles would rise from the ashes to address the concerns of that segment of the electorate.
But *this* thing, this fascist, white-Christian supremacist, theocratic abomination currently masquerading as Team Red has *got* to go. It's dangerous. Demonstrably so. It's already attempted a freaking coup.
It's a rabid animal that has to be put down by any means necessary.

100% agreed it's got to go.
