Stacy Blatt was in hospice care last September listening to Rush Limbaugh’s dire warnings about how badly Donald J. Trump’s campaign needed money when he went online and chipped in everything he could: $500.

It was a big sum for a 63-year-old battling cancer and living in Kansas City on less than $1,000 per month. But that single contribution — federal records show it was his first ever — quickly multiplied. Another $500 was withdrawn the next day, then $500 the next week and every week through mid-October, without his knowledge — until Mr. Blatt’s bank account had been depleted and frozen. When his utility and rent payments bounced, he called his brother, Russell, for help.

What the Blatts soon discovered was $3,000 in withdrawals by the Trump campaign in less than 30 days. They called their bank and said they thought they were victims of fraud.

“It felt,” Russell said, “like it was a scam.”

But what the Blatts believed was duplicity was actually an intentional scheme to boost revenues by the Trump campaign and the for-profit company that processed its online donations, WinRed. Facing a cash crunch and getting badly outspent by the Democrats, the campaign had begun last September to set up recurring donations by default for online donors, for every week until the election.

Contributors had to wade through a fine-print disclaimer and manually uncheck a box to opt out.

As the election neared, the Trump team made that disclaimer increasingly opaque, an investigation by The New York Times showed. It introduced a second prechecked box, known internally as a “money bomb,” that doubled a person’s contribution. Eventually its solicitations featured lines of text in bold and capital letters that overwhelmed the opt-out language.

The tactic ensnared scores of unsuspecting Trump loyalists — retirees, military veterans, nurses and even experienced political operatives. Soon, banks and credit card companies were inundated with fraud complaints from the president’s own supporters about donations they had not intended to make, sometimes for thousands of dollars.

“Bandits!” said Victor Amelino, a 78-year-old Californian, who made a $990 online donation to Mr. Trump in early September via WinRed. It recurred seven more times — adding up to almost $8,000. “I’m retired. I can’t afford to pay all that damn money.”

The sheer magnitude of the money involved is staggering for politics. In the final two and a half months of 2020, the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and their shared accounts issued more than 530,000 refunds worth $64.3 million to online donors.

All campaigns make refunds for various reasons, including to people who give more than the legal limit. But the sum the Trump operation refunded dwarfed that of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s campaign and his equivalent Democratic committees, which made 37,000 online refunds totaling $5.6 million in that time...............

    Terrible, and hardly surprising.

The sad part is that the people who go swindled by this scheme don't even blame trump. They are blaming the trump campaign. Even after being robbed to the point of not being able to pay their bills, trump supporters will find ways to try to not blame him for the things that trump does to them. Jim Jones ain't got nothing on Trump.

...........Let me put that another way: The man who spread voter fraud propaganda about voting machines automatically switching votes from Trump to Biden had an online donation site that automatically changed donation settings from one-time to “keep making it rain, please!”.

Before I continue, I just need to stop and... shirt... I’m not going to make it...

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA *gasps for breath* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

    *fixes face*

The New York Times conducted an investigation of Federal Election Commission records and found that the Trump campaign was forced to return more than $100 million in donations to his dumbarse supporters who are lucky AF that election activity is far more safeguarded than their Lord of the Goya Beans would have them believe.............

Think is that’s the way this guy operates and has for years. Either through lawyers, intimidation, his university it’s a a money making barely legal operation. Look at his actions as president. The golfing trips always to his properties, putting up security at his hotels. Spending time in Florida. The guy was a grifter his entire career. Why is this any different? Just more of what you would expect if you’d been following how he operates

    fixed

If I tell you "I'll put you up at a hotel for a couple days" that implies that I'm paying for it

Also, weren't they charged more than the normal daily rate on top of that?

This is not shocking at all when you think he started his campaign to sell cheap wine and steaks.

For the life of me me I really don't get how that this is even shocking in the least. He made his funds by ripping people off. So why would you think it would not be the same.

Hell he had to refund over 120 million bucks.

    Dude is just pathetic.

If you donate to a grifter you have to expect him to try to rob you. Their mistake wasn't trusting him, it was believing he deserved their donations in the first place.

Believe me, he's done this sort of thing for the past 40 years, it's one of his skillsets.

Though to be fair to the donors how many of us have scrolled down a mile of terms and conditions and just checked "I agree"?

And if you do try to read it, it's often in such dense legalese you have no idea what it's saying and just click on "I have read and understand"

While that's true, you have to balance that question with the other side of the equation...How many individuals/companies knew that no one would actually read that, so they added a pre-checked "I want this to be a weekly contribution"?

Even Sirius/XM, who is pretty brutal with their subscription billing, makes it very clear when you speak to them that at the end of whatever type of promo they offer you, it will automatically renew at the then-current rates.

Know your audience. Trump knows his audience. That is why this happened. And because he knows his audience oh so well, he also knows that they will never blame him directly

I wonder how many were swindled but just didn’t complain to the feds about it? Or didn’t even notice because the recurring amount was small enough to go unnoticed.

I mean $5 a week probably wouldn’t get noticed by a lot of people, but you get 10-20 million of them and it adds up.

Well, I hope this is one of those things people don't forget when the 2024 election primaries rolls around if Trump runs again.
The man looks diseased with really pale skin, bandages on his arms, his fat arse unable to tuck his shirt in, inability to stand up straight without going bow-legged, etc....I think he was hitting the illicit substances pretty hard the whole time he was president and his current look is the cost.

You have to give him credit for one thing, it is hard to maintain obesity and a stimulant addiction.

Weeelll, hope springs eternal. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn’t spring far enough.

Don’t forget Bird’s Theorem: “‘We The People’ are stupid”.
