This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I'm guessing not. Why would Trump even join Costco in the first place?

It isn't of course, but that's the problem with Trump. He's such a send up of himself to start off with. With anyone else, we'd have people refusing to believe the SAG resignation letter was real, not people thinking that the Costco spoof maybe is.

I think they are simply following what they think is the will of their electorate. They aren't leaders, they're just doing what their crowd wants. Again, I go back to that older lady telling McCain that Obama was a socialist Muslim.. he corrected her... lost the room. The ROOM.

Politicians always have to walk that line, but the ones that do the best for the country, identify real problems, effectively communicate and sell those ideas, and get the public to echo that.
64% of Republicans is only about 20% of voters. 15% of Democrats adds less than 5% of voters. 28% of independents adds less than 15% of voters. I think the Trump party would have less than 35% of the population, which is near the floor of Trumps favorability. It would destroy the GOP because that would only leave them about 15 to 20% of voters, while Democrats would still represent about 45 to 50% of voters. Maybe the conspiracy that Trump was a Democratic plant intended to destroy the Republican party is actually real!

I've seen the radicalization in my own family. Most of my family are Trumpers and quite a few conspiracists. They've started sending me Newsmax links. Newsmax and OAN are growing fast and driving the radicalization. I try to reason with them, ask them questions, and share other less crazy links. They just discount all of it because they think I'm a liberal socialist, and government websites and scientists can't be trusted either. At least they haven't accused me of drinking children's blood, but I won't be shocked. It's strange to see the progression of their beliefs.

OK, that cannot be real, the rant about loaning his card to others just seems like someone added it for comedic value.

Edit: I do give the creator of this letter some credit though, it's pretty hilarious and had it been presented on a SNL skit, Alec Baldwin would have killed it.

Definitely seems to be a spoof on his (actual) letter dropping out of SAG.

EDIT - I see Rob already posted

The gravity line made me laugh
    ================

...........Yet much of the Republican base — encouraged by Biden's predecessor — is oddly blithe about the threat the pandemic poses, compared with their countrymen with different politics.

The GOP has become the anti-mask party, the open-everything-up party, the "plandemic" conspiracy-theory party, the anti-expertise party, the anti-science party.

If Donald Trump announced tomorrow that gravity is a fiction invented to keep his supporters from flying, some true believers would hurry to jump off their roofs.

And they would fall to the ground at the rate of 32 feet per second squared. There is no compromise between "gravity is real" (whether described by Isaac Newton's equations or Albert Einstein's) and "gravity is a hoax."

It is ridiculous to give equal weight to "both sides" of the question because one is objectively true and one is absurdly, dangerously, life-threateningly false........

We've already seen all but a handful of GOP leaders fall in line behind Trump even through his defeat. I can't imagine any meaningful split happening. Even if McConnell disavows Trump I think that just takes him out of power and he knows it.

This isn't the first time the GOP has been declared dead in this decade even.

The only way the Republican Party will die is if the voters make it die. That is the ONLY time a political party ever reforms itself.

Despite all of the chaos, insanity, cruelty, and incompetence of Trump and the Republican Party over the past 20 years, they STILL did quite well during the 2020 election, picking up several House seats.

The GOP will have to be punished severely on election day in 2022 or 2024, otherwise this morally decadent party will continue to plague this country for decades to come. And if the GOP ever gets control of Congress or the White House again, democracy in this country is finished. The events on January 6th proved this. 140 Republicans in the House essentially voted to overturn the election results.

Every single election for the foreseeable future will now be a life or death struggle between democracy (i.e. the Democrats) and authoritarianism (i.e. the Republicans). Squabbles over domestic policy or economic policy or foreign policy are almost irrelevant right now.

I'm not sure the Republican party is salvageable. There needs to be a bigger tent moderate party where parts of the platforms of either format party are accepted and differing opinions within the party are allowed to flourish. No one has all the answers and no one party has a corner on the political landscape.

In the near term, a lot of centrists are going to be without a party for a bit. I don't think returning to the Republican party is something I can see myself doing for a long time, if ever. The crazies will have to be fully done away with, or a new party without the crazies has to be formed.

Part of the way to get there is ranked choice voting. More states need to consider this and voting has to be a sacred right that is accessible to every citizen.

I guess that's a whole other discussion, but I'm just not seeing a way forward in the party without some serious changes being made.

History will tell us whether or not it matters if the Republican Party is salvageable. This only matters if we are still a democracy a couple of years from now.

The Republican Party is going to go all out with their voter suppression and gerrymandering efforts in 2022 and try to steal enough House and Senate seats to regain their minority rule. Republican-controlled state legislatures throughout the country are already trying to jam through new voter suppression laws in their states for the 2022 election. If they succeed, there will never be another legitimate Congressional election or Presidential election in this country again.

Biden and the Democratic Party need to have their eyes wide open and fully understand this threat. If the Democrats don't take this threat seriously, then they will be in the permanent minority under Republican authoritarian rule forever starting in 2022. Schumer needs to get rid of the Senate filibuster as it pertains to election reform efforts, in order to remove these voter suppression and gerrymandering threats to our democracy.

    Nailed it.

That is pretty much how I feel about it with one caveat, it's also the responsibility of the elected officials to lead their electorate. They need to get their voters to see their "better angels" instead of feeding the monster and forcing the bar even lower. I've only seen 2 Congressional Republicans that have publicly sought out to raise public discourse among their electorate and they are Sen Romney and Rep Kinzinger.

Best thing Democrats (and Independents) can go is Register Republican and vote for the saner candidates in states with closed GOP primaries.

That would actually be a very clever strategy! Maybe Democrats can save the Republican Party since most Republican voters are too crazy and morally lost to do it.

What nonsense? We have 3 thousand witnesses to voter fraud. Pretty obvious Trump won by a lot. Only states trump lost were ones that broke chain of custody laws.. a stolen truck of 300,000 votes ..

That being total and absolute nonsense aside, Trump didn't lose by 303,000 votes.

Umm in 3-4 states he lost to fake votes by a few thousand.. states that broke chain of custody laws, states that didn’t let observers get up and close To look at signatures to challenge.. trump won by a lot
