The election data is always very interesting. Let's have a thread to discuss it so that it doesn't get washed away in the gameday thread.

We always suspected that a portion of the Trump vote in 2016 will leave him based on overall distaste with his conduct as president. There appears to be some evidence of that emerging . . . here's some from Wisconsin.

The cnn article is from a Virginia rep who thinks the reason for losses is socialism, and defund the police talk. I would argue if you do what Spanberger is suggesting and strip away the cultural wokeness, and the small amount of accepted progressive policies you are essentially Republicans.

Well, Republicans are hardly recognizable anymore, so no. :hihi:

There is no Democratic Party. Hasn't been for decades.
There's the Eisenhower Republican party and the Domionist Republican party.

    I came across this

on thing that seems to continue to stick out is that theres a lot of misinformation, and a lot of people fall for it:

My relatives tried to explain my grandparents' unwavering support for the Trump administration. Due to centuries-long tensions with China and how Chinese military ships have terrorized and threatened Vietnamese fishing boats, many Vietnamese Americans gravitate toward the Trump administration's anti-China stance. This is exacerbated by massive consumption of misinformation from right-wing sources on YouTube, through incendiary Facebook conspiracy posts, and Fox News. And unfortunately, the language barrier prevents them from accessing credible English-language sources to counter this barrage.

In a previous comment I made here, I had come across a similar article:

The new wave of false claims comes after Democrats raised alarms in the run-up to the election about Spanish-language misinformation that had circulated among Latino voters in Florida. And while researchers said Election Day passed without evidence of major English-language misinformation campaigns on social media, they cautioned that the coming days and weeks would be challenging.

On Friday morning, a doctored photo was being passed around in WhatsApp groups, a popular app among Latinos in Florida, showing Biden leaning uncomfortably close behind the former president of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, who herself was accused of electoral fraud in the South American country. Her image has been used in various Spanish-language misinformation memes about the outcome of the U.S. election on WhatsApp.

Content posted to WhatsApp is only viewable to members of the group it's posted in, making it near-impossible to gauge the spread of disinformation on the app, which often circulates within multiple large, closed groups simultaneously with little oversight.

That's an interesting article, I'm very curious what the results will be from the post-mortem for the latino vote in FL, and TX.

What does an Eisenhower party look like?

This guy would run as a Democrat these days.

Seeing more and more articles on how much disinformation played a role

“Priming is where an external source, a sender of information, is trying to prime people to think a certain way,” said Mark Whitmore, a professor of management and information systems at Kent State University who has studied misinformation and cognitive bias. “One of the ways in which priming occurs is through partisanship. When that happens, people have a greater tendency to think along the lines of whatever party they feel they belong to.”

I my opinion, Republicans are just better at messaging. In Miami-Dade, they flooded the airwaves painting Democrats as socialists. With no counterpunch, the smear stuck and Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade went overwhelmingly for trump. Same with the other Republican talking point that has been referenced many times here: "Defund the Police". While it didn't appear to hurt Biden a whole lot, that smear also stuck in a lot of downballot races. I've always said that Democrats always bring plastic cutlery to a gunfight. Not to mention that the different factions among the Democrats - be it blue dog, progressive, whatever - always seems the party is at war with itself. Republicans are always united in their message, regardless to whether there's any truth to that message.

Agreed, the postmortem seems to acknowledge that just ignoring stupidity from Republicans doesn’t work. I would have liked to see more from Democrats to educate the general population about what socialism is and why we don’t have any socialists involved in our political parties.

When a CBS news anchor looks sternly at Kamala Harris and asks her if she is a socialist, well, I knew that not only did the CBS news anchor nor anyone working on that broadcast not know what socialism is, probably most of the audience didn’t know either. I wanted to throw the remote at the TV. At least Harris laughed in her face, but we need more than that.

We also have to acknowledge that for the most part social media is still promoting extremism and disinformation (propaganda, really). They took some baby steps, but it’s obviously not enough. FB in particular is skewed towards right wing extremism. When Steve Bannon not only calls Fauci and Wray traitors, but crosses the line by saying Trump should put their heads on pikes in front of the White House, and FB says that doesn’t break any rules, well that’s a problem.

YouTube and FB both employ algorithms that funnel people toward extremism, this has been documented. They need to fix that. It is destabilizing for the country to be encouraging people to become radicalized.

Where was Bannon's head on pikes comment published or posted? I've been browsing FB and Twitter the last couple of days and haven't seen his comments anywhere. Only place I've seen it was here.

Dems fell way behind on social media too. In 2007-08, the Obama campaign destroyed Reps with their social media campaigns. It was still a relatively new form of communication and Obama was all over it. Of course, since then, it has become the preferred method of spreading completely false information by not just those here but all of our enemies. We live in a day and age where anyone with even modest computer skills can create a meme making a completely false statement (like voting machines changed millions of votes from trump to Biden), post it on social media, and within hours that lie has gone viral. It even finds its way to state TV. Democrats still live by the creed of "when they go low, we go high". I think that's a fine philosophy, misguided though it may be. The Republican strategy is "we can't possibly go low enough". You can't race them to the gutter, but you have to stand up and fight once in a while too.

It was banned on Twitter and YouTube and promptly deleted. He called for the literal beheading of traitors in Wray and fauci

It was actually a youtube video that he posted the link to on facebook. I'm not going to dirty my keyboard by going into any of his social media pages, but it's been widely reported.

Ok, but you have a poster saying not enough is being done about it, yet I'm not finding it by simply browsing Twitter/FB? It seems to me they're doing something about it. Maybe I'm not the audience...idk.

That's an interesting article, I'm very curious what the results will be from the post-mortem for the latino vote in FL, and TX.

The post mortem is that we need to stop treating the latino vote as if it is a singular voting bloc that cares about the same set of core values.

    For example:
There's a subset of latinos in TX that despise illegal immigration because they went through the legal channels, spent $$$ on immigration lawyers, etc to become legal citizens whereas they feel illegal immigrants skipped to the front of the line to get in. These care more about illegal immigration than they do care about social programs etc.

There's a subset of millenial aged latino voters that carry the same set of values as most other millenial/progressive voters, MFA, DACA, Student Loan Debt, etc...

There's a subset that is devoutly religious and are against what they perceive as the left's obsession w/ abortion, and other "amoral" lifestyles

There's a subset that run small businesses that saw that the shutdown adversely affected them personally...they want the economy opened up and back to pre-covid now, human cost be damned

There are other subsets as well...anti socialist, and so on, but my point is that you might not be able to satisfy all but you need to understand that each group has different values and there is a way to be against illegal immigration without being for what can be argued as "open borders", you can be for social programs without parading around calling yourself a "Democratic Socialist", there's a way to argue for a woman's right to choose without sounding as if you're some sort of abortion addicted thingy.

Incoherent babbling aside, maybe it's just the extreme moderate in me that sees that every issue isn't a zero sum game where I have to have 100% of what I want and you get nothing or vice versa...there is a happy medium, and this applies across all demographic groups. You can be for immigration - and against amnesty abuse, you can be for better policing without being all "defund the police"-ish...and so on.

I'm not sure which poster you're referring to. The only reference I see here is this:

That's not an accusation that nothing was done about it, just disgust with Zuckerbergs comments that the video and the statements by Bannon did not break FB rules. That's a pretty shocking admission for FB and an indication of where they are right now. Many on the left are leaving FB for Liker.com and many on the right are leaving FB for Parler..com. As his market share dwindles, he'll be forced to deal with his cavalier policies.
