Everything I've seen and heard says that the split second Donald Trump is no longer president there will be flood of charges waiting for him

And if he resigns and Pence pardons him there are a ton of state charges as an understudy waiting in the wings if the fed charges can't perform

What do you think the likelihood of there being a jail sentence?

    In every movie and TV show I've ever seen, in every political thriller I've ever read about a criminal and corrupt president there is ALWAYS some version of;

"We can't do that to the country",

"A trial would tear the country apart",

"For the nation to heal we need to move on" etc.

    Would life imitate art?

Even with the charges, even with the proof the charges are true will the powers that be decide, "we can't do that to the country"?

However you define it, the result is going to be the same.
This has nothing to do with what I said. I pointed out that I was not speaking in regards to should or could Trump be charged for his intentional reckless endangerment that directly contributed to some deaths.

Whether he's charged or not, it's important to not falsely equate what Trump did in regards to COVID to the inaction or incompetence of any other government official. They are not the same thing. Benghazi is not the same thing.

What Trump did was not the normal or typical government inaction or political calculation. What happens or does not happen to Trump is irrelevant to that being true and in no way negates that truth.

    Agreed.

I agree with you. My intent wasn’t to equate them but to equate the argument the Republicans were making. What Trump has done is egregious.

I understood what you were getting at about why we don't charge people for these things and didn't think you were equating the specific actions you mentioned. I was just preemptively making it clear that there is no "both sides" argument to be made for Trump intentionally lying to all of us about how deadly the virus is.

I want and hope Trump does jail time, but I do worry that it'll be a rallying point for his supporters. Even if a court deems him guilty, they may claim that it is fake news and the deep state. I worry of the lesson from history of Hitler going to jail, then coming out stronger with his Storm Troopers and Hitler youth. He was also a captivating public speaker that used to hold huge rallies in stadiums. He built the Nazi party for a decade after he got out of jail until it became the dominant party in Germany, and he was named Chancellor. Germany was ripe for this rise since its economy was horrible after WW1. We need to be wary of a decline in the economy motivating the MAGA Trumpists.

    Trump doesn't have ten years.

Do you mean his health? We really aren't sure. In typical strong man playbook of never showing weakness, we can only guess at his general health. We know he took unplanned trip Walter Reed before covid. We also know his cholesterol score is high, and a climbing calcium score. I assume Trump is probably pushing 300 pounds, but he does a decent amount of recreational activity with the golfing.

It's crazy to me that Trump hasn't cleaned up his diet. It's really all he would have to do to get his heart disease under control. He was blessed with good genetics overall.

My question is IF the SDNY does press charges, which I'm not sure they will. When? Surely they already have a case ready to go, if they have been building one over the last four years.

Yeah, Hitler wasn't half as old as Trump. I get the comparisons, but he's not Hitler and the US isn't Germany. Could it happen? Sure, but unlikely. They're certainly far different circumstances.
Germany used to be a democracy at the beginning of the 20th century. Trump may not run again, but he can be a king maker for his re-made party. I too believed we were different, but after seeing half of America vote for this wanna-be dictator, I’m not so sure. I’m currently wary of Trump’s maneuvers to oust people in the DoD. He may be planning an attempted coup, and needs loyalists to give orders to the DOD to support him. There is some support for Trump in the DoD, and the others will be faced with defying their leadership. It’s a dangerous situation.

Well, clearly, Trump and Esper were on the outs months ago. That was a long time coming. The others were a bit concerning, but not necessarily unexpected. When a leader goes, it's not unusual for others working closely with the leader to split too.

I just don't think this is a coup attempt. There are too many other important things he'd have to do to pull off a coup.

What else is important besides getting heads of the military to support him? If he can do that, the only remaining question is will DoD subordinates follow the orders of these newly appointed Trumpers. It is hard for officers to disobey orders from their superiors. Everything else Trump is doing is window dressing or subterfuge to get us to look away. The lawsuits are all going to be meaningless, which leaves him only the coup option or leaving office. I'm convinced that Trump is doing everything he can to attempt a coup. I have little doubt that he has had extensive conversations with Putin on how to go about it. Trump may not succeed, but it is his best hope to stave off prison. If he does fail before 20 JAN 2021, then he is laying the groundwork for the coup that he can cultivate while he fights the court battles. Those moles will need to be rooted out.

Well, it's conspiracy theory territory at this point. There's already rumors he's talking of a 2024 run, which would make a coup pointless. So I'd rather let the states certify and courts answer the challenges then I have faith that the powers that be recognize that Trump is a lame duck and start preparing for a Biden presidency. No one in Congress/SCOTUS/Pentagon are going to accept a subversion of the government by Trump. I just don't see that happening.

I think the 2024 rumors are more distractions. I acknowledge that it is a conspiracy theory that he is preparing for a coup, but it is based on logic and his behavior. Logic, because if he leaves office he may go to jail, and he will exhaust all avenues to go to jail. Behavior because the people he's replacing are the ones that can block a coup, and his previous statements about deserving to remain in office, and his current statements alleging the election was stolen from him. That is the kind of talk that all dictators use before a coup attempt. I'm certain the states will certify Biden the winner and the courts will rule against Trump on all significant lawsuits, so those are irrelevant. What is not irrelevant, and can't be ignored, is the possibility of a coup. If we act like it isn't possible, then we let down our guard. It is Trump's best hope, so we must be vigilant for it.

Well, I don't think anyone other than Trump's devoted followers are letting down their guard. At least not in DC. We should be vigilant regardless. I just think it's fear mongering at this point. Now there are other potential moves he can make that would get my attention. But what I've see so far doesn't add up.

And this is coming from me, who despises the guy and can't wait til this is over so we can move on to better topics.

What move would get your attention?

I probably worded it badly. The moves he's already made are worth paying attention to, but I would say that if he ignores court orders, starts sacking intelligence agency heads and attempts to replace the Joint Chiefs. I don't think he's done enough to think he's planning a coup. That said, if he does some of the things listed, that would start to worry me.

Let's not forget that Congress and SCOTUS do have plenty of power and can handcuff the President if they feel its necessary. Trump isn't a king or dictator. The military will not accept him as such no matter who he installs as Sec Def. The one he picked has 30+ years of experience and from what I've read, seems to be a no nonsense guy. I get why people are throwing it out there, but I'm not seeing it from where I sit.
