I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Wait... So the CDC offers to assist with the contact tracing, which the White House isn't doing, and they get turned down? Why?

    (Don't answer that. )

If you don't test, you have fewer cases.

I expect the next iteration of the 'debate' or science crisis to be about the vaccine. Today's The Daily podcast talked about the candidates that look promising but won't be ready until end of December.

A couple of implications that crossed my mind:

    1. Had Trump taken this seriously in January, then the vaccines are hitting the market around election time. So, even though he had no way of knowing, his reluctance to admit, publicly, the seriousness of the threat, he delayed the trials. Had he acted responsibly, we could be looking at a vaccine sooner, which is what he wants for the election. Now, I also acknowledge this has also been something of a global race, too. But still...

    2. The treatments he got - which are neither vaccines nor cures - to be popularized as treatments. But I am not sure how many insurance companies are going to cover monoclonal treatments. I'm willing to bet not many. So in the absence of a real vaccine candidate, I anticipate this being the next talking point.

    3. He wasn't taking HCQ or bleach or whatever else. What was he taking? What science has shown and taught us are the best options against this virus. He's late to the 'let the science lead!' party. Imagine if he'd shown a modicum of leadership and this attitude throughout? How many lives could have been saved? It's really disgusting to think about the abject amorality he demonstrated.

Even now, he's not really highlighting the use of a mask and the WH has been clearly disregarding this.

    It's so incredibly stupid.

The US needs to tumble a few pegs and maybe that cold realization will be enough for us to get our act together

The next debate will all be about Regeneron monoclonal antibodies and how Trump will give away for free.

Because that's the miracle drug. Not the rendemsvir, not the dexamethasome

Yea, as I noted in the other thread just now - it's crazy. He couldn't keep track of anything after the first couple of minutes and it just became rambling as he tried to placate as many different people as possible. Old people. Give it away. Feel better quickly. China's fault. Etc.

The Democrats’ latest $2.2 trillion stimulus proposal — passed by the House last week — has a higher price tag than the White House’s reported $1.8 trillion proposal and a much higher price tag than the GOP’s previous $300 billion proposal.

McConnell noted on Friday that he’d like to see another bipartisan stimulus deal “like we did back in March and April, but I think that's unlikely in the next three weeks.” (President Trump signed the CARES Act into law on March 27, 2020, and most of the stimulus ran out at the end of July.)

In early August, McConnell said that the GOP would go along with any deal made between the White House and Democrats — but that no longer seems to be the case.

“Leader McConnell continues to try to make the best of a tough situation,” Mark Harkins, a former congressional staffer and senior fellow at Georgetown’s Government Affairs Institute, told Yahoo Money. “The president would benefit politically from an agreement but a majority of Senate Republicans simply do not support the level of spending being discussed.”

I get that Senate Republicans are suddenly concerned about the deficit again. Funny how that works at the end.

However, there are two ways to create a deficit. Over spending and undercollected taxes (i.e. not enough receipts). If we do nothing, and all all of these foreclosures, homelessness, economic crash... we're going to be adding to the deficit and having problems for years, if not a full decade to come... or we can over spend a bit now and hope this is the last bit to bridge the gap until the virus isn't as big of a factor (lower cases / treatments / vaccine).

Yeah, I really think Senate Republicans are being shortsighted here. That said, some are up for reelection and will want to pretend they care about the budgets for appearances sake with their constituents. Maybe the lame duck Congress gets it done. That said, if Trump is a lame duck, who knows what he'll do?

McConnell simply cares not for anyone but the wealthy. In my opinion he is more harmful to our country than Trump. Why is it that his familial connections to China are not ever discussed nationally?

Looks like this would have been ordered a month ago. So, pretty late in the game. I do understand the desire for State's rights, but the reality is, since we can travel so easily inter state wise, it would be wise to have a Federal plan.

They should have asked again about a week or so ago.

On a personal note... for the first time since April.. I got full 80 hour (for 2 weeks) paycheck. Nice to be back on full time. We're still short staffed and many groups are only doing 4 days a week still. But, we're getting there.

I still am hoping for that next stimulus / relief bill. I lost a lot of money the last few months when the Fed money ran out, and many businesses and people need the help.

Either deficit spend, or lose a lot of tax receipts. Dealer's choice. But that second part also comes with major economic damage, homlessness, etc.

When you don’t want any medical experts speaking to the American people

And your preferred infectious disease expert is a radiologist, who was seen at the side of the rally at the WH, sans mask. 🤦‍♀️

Our curves are going the wrong way. We are seeing the beginning of the dreaded second wave. I feel terrible for you all in the south- particularly Florida where it is going to get bad with the restrictions totally removed.

Fake news! Let's fill up the stadium with 90k fans so we can beat LSU! A&M did it. Why can't we? - So says the Gators head coach. :covri:

This could probably go in a couple other related topics (related to the fake political ad Trump and co made taking his words out of context to show faux praise for Trump)
