“All United States Marshals Service arrestees have public records of arrest documenting their charges. Our agency did not arrest or detain Mark James Pettibone.”

OPB sent DHS an extensive list of questions about Pettibone’s arrest including: What is the legal justification for making arrests away from federal property? What is the legal justification for searching people who are not participating in criminal activity? Why are federal officers using civilian vehicles and taking people away in them? Are the arrests federal officers make legal under the constitution? If so, how?

After 7 p.m. Thursday, a DHS spokesperson responded, on background, that they could confirm Wolf was in Portland during the day. The spokesperson didn’t acknowledge the remaining questions.

    This story is very troublesome.

I really dislike videos like this that provide no context. We have no idea what precipitated the arrest. I seriously doubt that they are just riding around looking to snatch people up off the street. Something happened, but we just see the aftermatch, leaving people to frame the incident as they wish.

That's not really how arrests look though...You usually don't just pluck someone off of a skateboard...

We see a skateboard, but don't know if he was skating by and threw a brick or just waved at them. That's my point -- no context. We don't know for a fact that it was his skateboard or if he dropped the skateboard after hitting something or someone with it.

Agree that it's lacking full context, but I think the idea of people not wearing any sort of identifiable uniform (several of them looking like they were in plain clothes) and pulling someone into an unmarked van, is a bit troubling.

It doesn’t matter what the person on the skateboard did. No one was arresting them. They weren’t read their rights, they were just taken.

That’s not acceptable law enforcement behavior in a free society,

It's not surprising that they apprehended the subject with plain clothes police when you consider all of the attacks on police recently.

Fair enough. But can we demand proof from the police as much as we do from citizens?

I'm not sure they get the benefit of the doubt anymore, which is very sad.

So my wife and I just got back from the protests and the speakers announced that the feds and Governor Brown apparently are close to a deal for them to leave Portland.
I bet everything will hinge on the state and local PD actually protecting the courthouse and guaranteeing its safety. And I bet the 'protestes' don't magically move in that direction at nightfall. I would also imagine, the local government and state government will also figure out a way to raise the citizens taxes in order to 'prevent' the Feds from having to come in again and have the riots stop. Just a hunch.

I see that some people are claiming it's just peaceful protests until the feds get violent. I've seen plenty videos of the mob attacking officers or the couthouse, but I didn't see any posted in this thread. I searched Portland riots video on Twitter. I know some will complain about Andy Ngo posting the videos.

I would rather see a courthouse burned to the ground than to allow law enforcement to behave the way they have in Portland.

The courthouse has been metaphorically burned to the ground because what it stands for has been shat on by the President.

Well, the feds are leaving Portland. Never should have been there to begin with.

If Portland's politicians would have protected federal property and not told the police to stand down, there wouldn't have been a need for the federal officers.

I think it's fair to say that there might be a better way to handle attempts to damage federal property than the one that Portland initially tried. But I also think it's hard to say the federal response was better, right?
